A stock that grows from โน1,00,000 to โน2,00,00,000 over 5 years has an eye-catching 19,900% absolute return โ but that single number doesn't tell you the annual pace of growth, which is what you actually need to compare it against a fixed deposit, another fund, or a different time horizon.
CAGR (Compound Annual Growth Rate) answers the question "what single, steady annual growth rate would have produced this same result?" โ smoothing out the year-to-year ups and downs into one comparable number. That same example, expressed as CAGR, is about 188.5% per year โ still extraordinary, but now directly comparable to a 12% Nifty 50 CAGR or a 7% Fixed Deposit rate.
Absolute return is useful for a quick headline, but CAGR is the number professionals use to compare investments of different durations fairly โ always check the time period behind any "return %" you see quoted.
