The SG is the compulsory contribution your employer must pay into your super fund โ currently 12% of your ordinary time earnings, the final step of a multi-year legislated increase that concluded on 1 July 2025.
Concessional (before-tax) contributions โ SG, salary sacrifice, personal deductible โ are taxed at 15% in the fund and capped annually. Non-concessional (after-tax) contributions enter tax-free but have a separate, larger annual cap (roughly 4ร the concessional cap).
Lower-income earners who make personal after-tax contributions can receive a government co-contribution of up to $500/yr. Separately, the Low Income Super Tax Offset (LISTO) refunds the 15% contributions tax (up to $500/yr) for eligible low-income earners.
Preservation age โ the earliest you can generally access your super โ is 60 for anyone born after 30 June 1964. The Age Pension (a separate Centrelink payment) has its own qualifying age of 67, regardless of your super's preservation age.
Worked example: A 30-year-old on $90,000 with a $30,000 starting balance and 12% SG, no voluntary contributions, growth-profile returns (7.5%) and 3% p.a. salary growth, reaches roughly $2.8 million (nominal) by age 67 โ before adjusting for inflation or investment sequence risk.
